There are a variety of benefits that can come from counseling. At New Perspectives each of these are individualized for the client. Counselors are there to provide levels of support, teach certain skills, and help patients discover new coping strategies for things like anxiety, depression, stress, or even creative blocks. We are here to help you learn how to navigate the terrain of the future so that you are able to feel successful not matter what you face.

You don’t need to have some kind of ‘major disorder’ to find usefulness from a counselor, counseling can be helpful by just having someone to help you processes through your thoughts and what is happening in your life.  We aim to offer a different way of looking at things – perhaps a perspective you haven’t yet considered, which makes it easier to point you in the right direction, and find the solutions you’re looking for in life.

Of course, counselors can’t just ‘fix’ anything on their own. It’s up to the individual to take what they discussed and the resources they learn in session and apply them to their lives.

Still unsure about what counseling could do for you? Contact us and we’ll be happy to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have!

While everyone’s reasons for coming to counseling are different, whether they’re going through a difficult stage, or a specific event like divorce, or just aren’t dealing with ongoing issues well. Sometimes, the assistance of counseling can not only help with specific situations, but with day to day concerns as well. Depression, anxiety, relationship issues, ADHD and even low-self esteem are often common reasons to seek out help. You may start out trying counseling to help with one area, and find on your journey that you gain so much more that can be utilized in many more areas of life. Counseling is a personal decision, but if you take a look at your life, and you want to make a change, it’s likely that some form of counseling could be helpful to you. There isn’t a single person alive who doesn’t experiences some sort of  challenges at some pointe in their life. Some people simply handle some of these challenges better than others, and even then, it’s never a bad idea to have additional support and understanding when it comes to the obstacles you’ve gone through.

Just like the reasons for seeking counseling are different for everyone, most people also tend to have different expectations of what counseling entails. The good news is that counseling is completely individually-focused, which is why everyone can get something different out of it. Counseling can range from being focused on a specific need, where only a ‘short term’ solution is needed, while in other cases, someone may go to therapy regularly, weekly or every other week, to simply work more on personal growth.

Counseling isn’t meant to be a ‘quick fix’  and a counselor is not someone who can simply solve your problems and make it all better.  It is a circumstance where your participation level determines your success. The more you involve yourself in the process, the better results you’re bound to see. It’s a practice in everyday living, in which you take what you learn from the session, and apply it to your life. Therefore, it’s important to be mentally prepared to make those changes in your life, and desire new perspectives on things.

There is nothing more important in counseling  than confidentiality. As with any doctor/patient agreement, your privacy is of the utmost importance. Openness and vulnerability are key to the counseling process, and a  client-counselor relationship built on trust opens the door to that. The electronic intake form includes a confidentiality agreement, called an “informed consent” that will specify with whom we may disclose information. Some people choose to have other individuals such as their healthcare providers, legal representatives or specific family members informed of their ongoing treatment.  However, you can choose to keep everything we discuss confidential. If you do want specific information shared an additional consent will need to be signed for each individual. Nothing you share in your sessions will be told to anyone else, with the exceptions of suspected abuse of any kind (including child and elder protection), if we have any reason to believe you may hurt yourself or others or if a judge subpoenas’ records for a case. These situations are a matter of ethical procedures, and sometimes, even the law.
